Introduction
This open courseware course is an abstract of the Online Course on Industrial Resource Management and Cleaner Production.
Welcome to the Open Course Ware on INDUSTRIAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND CLEANER PRODUCTION (IRM & CP) organized by UNESCO-IHE. In this course, you will immerse yourself in a topic of increasing local, regional, national and international importance: WATER and RESOURCE RECOVERY. Water is considered to become increasingly scarce because of increasing usage and increasing levels of pollution of the used water. Resources are important because these are materials, we humans deal with everyday; essentially, these also include services, staff, assets, among others, that are transformed to produce benefit(s) to the society.
This course deals on one hand with methodologies that assist in assessing and quantifying environmental impacts and in bringing about environmental improvement. On the other hand the course discusses reasons for water quality deterioration and remediation opportunities. IRM & CP brings about a different way of thinking, focusing on conservation in general and on dealing with water intelligently in particular. This way of thinking will benefit you for the rest of your life. We hope that this course may turn out to be a rewarding one that provides you with insight, knowledge and interest in the field.
For whom?
The course on Cleaner Production and the Water Cycle is directed at engineers and scientists working in the urban or industrial water field and wanting to have a better grasp at the efficient dealing with water. As such the module is of interest to engineers and scientists in the fields of urban, municipal and industrial sanitation, water-related chemistry, biologists, water resources, process design and implementation.
Learning Objectives
After this course you will be able to:
define the concept of Cleaner Production (CP) and the consequences thereof for various (industrial) production processes
suggest options for preventing pollution within urban and industrial water management settings;
assess the environmental impact of products and processes and indicate how the sustainable use of resources can be beneficial for reducing environmental burden(s);
suggest treatment/disposal methods for industrial wastewater from which the value has been taken out;
understand the importance of environmental management systems in the industrial context; •
analyze the different system tools that support industrial ecology and make basic calculations related to life cycle analysis.

Units and forum discussion(s)
The Industrial Resource Management and Cleaner Production course consists of a number of units and sub-units (~15). Each unit consists of a combination of reading, viewing and study materials. Moreover, in most units you will be challenged to engage yourself in a forum discussion and provide your feedback on the topic to other participants following this course (included only after enrollment in the paid/regular version of this online course)
Your course mentor
In the regular version of this OLC, you will be guided through by a course coordinator. The general coordination and responsibility for this OCW is with Eldon R. Rene, (e.raj@unesco-ihe.org), staff member of UNESCO-IHE. He has a PhD in Chemical Engineering from IIT Madras, India. He has 7 years of post-doctoral research experience on topics pertaining to air pollution control, eco-industrial parks and wastewater treatment systems. Eldon will regularly check the course activities and requirements of this open course.
