There are two typologies of monitoring. One, operational monitoring, is used by the water operator to ensure that the control measures in place are working properly to prevent contamination from occurring. It is generally carried out very frequently and it consists of observations and water quality testing of parameters that provide results very quickly. Examples of observations include checking the integrity of a fence or wellhead, or the users practices during water collection. Examples of parameters to be monitored on routine (daily) basis are turbidity in raw water or chlorine residual in storage reservoirs.

The second type of monitoring is compliance monitoring. This is typically done only once or twice a year, sometimes even less often. Generally, it is the responsibility of the local health office and should be done in line with national regulations. But in some more complex cases it can be done by the suppliers themselves. The objective is to confirm that drinking water complies with drinking-water quality standards.

For this assignment, you will fill in both the operational monitoring plan and the compliance monitoring plan.
