Consider time scales

Being strategic and timely about when to communicate will increase the likelihood of achieving your desired impact. For example, timing your messaging to coincide with an upcoming event e.g. a summit or conference can help you target the right people.

  1. Find 5 relevant events, news stories, holidays, deadlines (e.g. a funding call) that might be relevant to your communication objectives.
  2. Put the most relevant ones in your calendar so that you can anticipate when you want to try and reach people.
  3. Write down when you think you should start posting/sending messages in relation to these.

Timing checklist

  • You can start to communicate before an event, taking advantage of any anticipation. Usually a few days before, but this can vary.
  • You can communicate during an event e.g. during a conference.
  • You can communicate after an event.
  • Use hashtags or identifiers for that event, day, issue e.g. #worldwaterday
  • Find out when your target audience are most likely to log-in and see your message

Use scheduling tools so that you can be more organised and release content when you want to
