UNESCO-IHE and MetaMeta as co-conveners of the Spate Irrigation Network, have, with support from UNW-DPC and DUPC produced this series of lectures on Spate Irrigation Systems. The series aims to capture and disseminate key aspects and emerging issues of Spate Irrigation systems relevant to rural livelihoods, and food and water security. The lectures feature experts and stories from major spate-irrigated areas from Yemen, Pakistan, Ethiopia and Sudan.
The Spate Irrigation Network aims to improve the livelihoods of those living in spate irrigated areas. It exchanges experiences and good practices, initiates and supports new programs and policies, and mainstreams education and training. It is supported by IFAD, World Bank/EKN, UNW-DPC, UNESCO-IHE/DUPC and FAO.
The Video Lecture Series on Spate Irrigation Systems is a follow-up from the "Mainstreaming Spate Irrigation in Higher Education" Workshop, jointly organized by FAO, UNESCO-IHE, UNW-DPC, The Spate Irrigation Network and MetaMeta in Delft, the Netherlands from 20-22 September 2010.

The design, use and performance of spate irrigation systems are affected by the following hydrological factors:
- The volume of runoff from the catchment
- The timescale during which the flow occurs
- The size and probability of floods
- The climate in the irrigated area
- The reliability of rainfall and floods.
What makes these systems unique is the poor predictability of the flows that have to be utilized and the large amounts of sediments they bring in. Managing a spate irrigation system is about managing variable flows and sedimentation, and even making them work in favor of agricultural productivity.
