General Information
Introduction
This e-learning module aims to contribute to capacity building of professionals involved in disaster risk management from extreme hydro-meteorological events. The module represents the means to disseminate the concepts developed within the PEARL project (www.pearl-fp7.eu). It draws upon the theory and practice concerning multi hazards, holistic risk assessment, development of strategies and selection of measures, and their implementation. It contains a pool of case studies in Europe and also Internationally
For whom?
Engineers, practitioners, professionals working on water management from local municipalities.
Learning Objectives
After this course you will be able to:
- Develop enhanced understanding of the processes and drivers involved in the formation of flood risk in coastal areas
- Understand the basic concepts related to climate change, extreme events, hazards and vulnerability assessment
- Develop understanding of how to use models to assess hazards and vulnerabilities and the formation of different flood risk
- Introduction to the set-up and use of urban drainage models and how to evaluate system performance against different standards (engineering, environmental, public health, etc.), and develop understanding of novel techniques for modelling the complex geometry and interaction between surface water (including floodplains), sub-surface flows and urban drainage infrastructure (1D and coupled 1D/2D), coastal systems modelling and interaction between coastal and urban water systems
- Learn how to produce different flood risk maps in a GIS environment and how to calculate different types of flood damages
- Develop understanding of structural and non-structural flood resilience measures such as, conventional and innovative structures, early warning systems, etc., and understand how to develop effective flood disaster management plans and enhance decision making, and
- Be exposed to a set of European practical case studies, show casing challenges and innovative solutions
