Unit 1.2: Characteristics of urine, faeces and greywater

Expected Study Load: 8 hours.

Introduction:

Within the ecosan concept, reusing the useful elements of human excreta is key. Therefore, it is very important to know all elements within urine and faeces, how they change under different circumstances, and what we can do to keep the conditions as favourable as possible for reuse options.

Learning Objectives:

After completing this unit, the student will:

  • know basic facts about urine and faeces production in terms of quantity
  • be able to describe the main characteristics of urine, faeces and greywater with respect to water content, nitrogen, phosphorus, organic matter content and other parameters
  • be able to describe changes which occur in urine during storage
  • understand the differences between fresh and dried faeces
