Unit 5: Constructed Wetlands

After completing this unit, you will:
- know about the different types of constructed wetlands (CWs)
- be able to distinguish between the free water surface CW and sub-surface flow CWs
- know basic principles of wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands
- know how to estimate the required surface area of a constructed wetland, using simple design parameters such as load of BOD per square metre and day
- have an awareness of operation and maintenance issues for constructed wetlands
- have a mental picture of what it looks like to construct sub-surface flow CWs
