Structures of Chance Along the Lower Rhine

Dutch gaming culture did not emerge from aristocratic leisure or moral ambiguity — it grew from the same institutional soil that produced the world's first multinational corporation and a tradition of cooperative risk management stretching back to the medieval polder boards. The comparison was instructive precisely because the two countries began from different premises.
